Life Insurance

You don’t buy life insurance because you are going to die, but because those you love are going to live.

AFSPA’s comprehensive life insurance options help you to ensure your family will have the resources they need to carry on—from caregiving expenses if you become chronically ill, to payouts to cover funeral costs, outstanding bills, and ongoing living expenses in the event of your death. Best of all, you can enroll in any of our life plans at any time without having to wait for a special enrollment period.

Choose from three life plans. Enroll anytime!

CORRECTION NOTICE: A previous email was sent on September 24, 2024, announcing the open enrollment. In that email, we mistakenly advertised that the guaranteed issue amount for the Group Enhanced Life (GEL) was $200K. The correct guaranteed issue amount is up to $50K. We apologize for this error.

Group Enhanced Life (GEL)

Add-on or stand-alone coverage with flexible "use now" options

Providing coverage for you and your family when you need it most,  Group Enhanced Life (GEL) offers important benefits such as the GEL Accelerated Benefit Option (ABO) that pays you benefits while you are still living. These ABO living benefits are designed to help your family cover the costly financial burdens due to any terminal or chronic illness you may face.

Whether you choose GEL as a stand-alone life insurance option—or to augment your existing FEGLI coverage—you will also have the option to keep it even after leaving the government service, up to the age of 80.

This coverage is not available in the following states: MT, NH, WA, & PR

Prudential offers a Life Insurance Estimate Calculator to help you determine a coverage amount that best fits your current financial needs.

Accelerated Benefit Option is a feature that is made available to group life insurance participants. It is not a health, nursing home, or long-term care insurance benefit and is not designed to eliminate the need for those types of insurance coverage. The death benefit is reduced by the amount of the accelerated death benefit paid. There is no administrative fee to accelerate benefits. Receipt of accelerated death benefits may affect eligibility for public assistance and may be taxable. The federal income tax treatment of payments made under this rider depends upon whether the insured is the recipient of the benefits and is considered terminally ill or chronically ill. You may wish to seek professional tax advice before exercising this option.

Group Enhanced Life coverage is issued by The Prudential Insurance Company of America, Newark, NJ. The Booklet-Certificate contains all details, including any policy exclusions, limitations, and restrictions, which may apply. CA COA #1179, NAIC #68241. Contract Series: 83500.

Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D)

The surefire way to plan for an accident

Accidents will happen and while we can never know exactly when, we can help provide for the fallout of a potential sudden tragedy. When living and working overseas, it is especially prudent to take added precaution and be prepared for the aftermath of a crippling mishap or catastrophe.

With coverage of up to $600,000, the Accidental Death and Dismemberment plan will help you and/or your survivors get on with life a little easier should you befall a severe or fatal accident anywhere in the world. While injuries suffered due to a war are not covered, the plan does provide for injuries caused by terrorism.

Note: You can enroll at any time without having to undergo medical underwriting or review of your health history.

This coverage is not available in the following states: MT, NH, WA, & PR

This policy provides ACCIDENT insurance only. It does NOT provide basic hospital, basic medical insurance as defined by the New York State Department of Financial Services.

Immediate Benefit Plan

Pays death benefits in 48 hours for participants in select agencies

The Immediate Benefit Plan (IBP) provides prompt benefit payout to your beneficiaries to help mitigate the financial burdens of funeral arrangements, final medical bills, and travel costs for family and friends.

While typical life insurance policies can take weeks or months to deliver benefits—which is often complicated when death occurs in another country—IBP benefit processing begins within two business days after AFSPA receives official notice of death from the employee’s agency.

NoteThis plan is exclusively available only to active duty, U.S. citizen, direct-hire Foreign Service and Civil Service employees of the agencies below. This plan is NOT available to contractors.
