FAQs (5)

If I have the Foreign Service Benefit Plan do I need the medical assistance coverage?

Your FSBP membership provides coverage anywhere in the world, so you may elect Plan C that excludes medical coverage when purchasing this travel insurance plan. Unlike FSBP, Plan C provides emergency evacuation back to the U.S. or home residence, repatriation of remains, and 24-hour accidental death coverage. FSBP will cover emergency medical evacuation to the nearest treatment facility, which may not be in the U.S. or area of home residence; FSBP does not cover repatriation of remains or 24-hour accidental death coverage.

Is coverage available to my family visiting from overseas?
Unfortunately, no, as travel must originate in the United States in order for coverage to be issued.
What if I am leaving within one or two days and want this coverage?

You can enroll directly by calling (800) 821-2828. In order to receive the AFSPA member discount by telephone, please advise the associate that you are an AFSPA member and our vendor number is 23.

Can I use this policy domestically?

Yes, this plan requires that travel originate in the U.S. and that the insured person or group travels at least 100 miles from your home. However, the plan is not available for residents of Kentucky or Maryland, no matter your travel destination.

Does Medicare cover me when I travel overseas?

Medicare only covers the medical expenses you incur when you are in the continental U.S. Therefore, enrolling in a travel insurance policy that covers medical expenses overseas is appropriate.
