In the past, we celebrated Autism Awareness Month in April; however, as a collective, we’ve switched gears to focus on Autism Acceptance. Many organizations and advocates felt that “awareness” wasn’t enough. They deemed that there was no longer a need to talk about awareness because we know that autism exists. However, now is the time for understanding, inclusion, and respect.
Some felt frustrated that many awareness campaigns focused on highlighting differences instead of strengths, voices, and/or rights. To help change that, the Autism Society of America began promoting April as Autism Acceptance Month in 2021, symbolizing empowerment and inclusion. Since then, other organizations like the Centers for Disease and Control Prevention (CDC) have also focused on equitable access to care and support.
For us today, this highlights a call to action to amplify autistic voices, challenge harmful stereotypes, improve support systems, and promote policy changes and accessibility. This is just a start, but it doesn’t stop here.
Autism Acceptance means that you understand that not everyone communicates, learns, or experiences life the same way. Autism isn’t a one-size-fits-all disorder. Each diagnosis comes with a diverse range of talents, experiences, and perspectives. Some might need a little extra help, while others might be highly independent. Everyone’s story is different.
Autism Acceptance is also about creating more inclusive spaces and recognizing that being different doesn’t mean this person is not deserving of friendship, love, and/or care. So, for April and all year long, embrace conversations around autism. Promote better support. Engage with the bright minds of autistic people you know. Additionally, continue to be kind, inclusive, and an autism advocate.
