From the CEO - September 2024

Dear AFSPA Member,

Welcome to September! As we settle into the new school year, it is important to get ready for the upcoming changes and challenges. This month, we are also emphasizing the significance of life insurance and managing cholesterol levels for overall well-being. AFSPA is here to connect you with expert advice, resources, and opportunities to navigate these transitions and improve our health and security. Keeping with our theme for the year, remember to always Choose Health: Because You Matter.

Back to School

I know from recent experience that preparing for the back-to-school season can be challenging for both kids and parents. Changing schedules, less free time, and for many, starting in new locations can make the transition difficult. Have a look at our recent AFSPA Talks podcast interview with two experts from Brightline Health. They provide useful strategies for families to make the return to school easier for everyone. Additionally, read our recent Back to School Preparation Guide blog to further help you navigate this transition smoothly, ensuring emotional well-being for both you and your kids.

Life Insurance Awareness Month

Life Insurance Awareness Month is a great time to review your policies and make sure you have the right coverage to protect your loved ones. Life insurance provides financial security for your family if you were to pass away unexpectedly. It’s important to understand the different types of life insurance available and choose a policy that fits your specific needs and budget. Don’t wait until it’s too late – take the time this month to ensure your family’s future is protected. Join us for a webinar on September 17th to learn about the importance of life insurance. Don’t miss this informative session available at 8 am, 1 pm, and 6 pm. To learn more about AFSPA’s life insurance options, visit our website at afspa.org/life

And be on the lookout for information about an open enrollment period for AFSPA’s Group Enhanced Life (GEL) and Immediate Benefit Plan (IBP) programs beginning October 1.

National Cholesterol Education Month

This month is a reminder of the importance of understanding and managing cholesterol levels for maintaining heart health and preventing disease. High cholesterol is a significant risk factor for heart disease, one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. I encourage you to get your cholesterol levels checked, learn about the impact of cholesterol on your health, and try to adopt healthier lifestyle choices. Whether it’s through diet, exercise, or medication, there are various ways to effectively manage cholesterol levels. Members of the Foreign Service Benefit Plan (FSBP) have access to wellness programs designed for those who may be at risk for heart disease. Additionally, FSBP members can earn $100 in wellness rewards after completing an annual exam and biometric screening, and another $75 after completing their health risk assessment (HRA).
