Supporting LGBTQ+ Health: A Guide for FSBP Members

In today’s diverse world, providing inclusive healthcare coverage is paramount. At the American Foreign Service Protective Association, through our health plan, Foreign Service Benefit Plan (FSBP), we prioritize the health and well-being of all our members, including those who identify as LGBTQ+. Here’s how FSBP supports LGBTQ+ members through our partnership with Brightline, wellness programs, and our comprehensive healthcare benefits:

Brightline: Supporting Families and Youth

Brightline, our partner specializing in adolescent behavioral health, offers invaluable resources for families navigating discussions around sexual orientation and gender identity. This Brightline blog post encourages open and curious dialogue, the use of gender-neutral language, and advocacy against injustice in the LGBTQ+ community. It emphasizes the importance of checking biases and continuous education for parents. Through Brightline, FSBP members can access coaching programs tailored for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ individuals, fostering inclusivity and support.

Provider Search Tool: Access to LGBTQ+ Specialists

FSBP‘s Provider Search Tool includes a filter for behavioral health specialists with expertise in LGBTQIA issues. Members can easily locate providers who understand and are experienced in addressing the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community. This ensures that individuals receive culturally competent and affirming care from knowledgeable professionals.

  • From the Provider Search Tool site, enter your location, select the network (POS II for all US but Guam), select “Behavioral Health,” then select “Behavioral Health Professionals.” Scroll to “LBGTQIA” to filter for providers who “have experience and familiarity with the challenges of the LGBTQIA community.”

myStrength™: Personalized Mental Wellness Resources

FSBP members ages 13 and older, including covered dependents, have access to myStrength™. This web-based program offers personalized resources to overcome obstacles associated with depression, anxiety, and substance use disorder. Utilizing evidence-based mental wellness models like cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness, myStrength™ empowers individuals to take control of their mental health journey.

Telehealth Services: Stateside and Overseas

Another way to access mental health care is through our Telehealth programs. Telehealth consultations are available to members in the 50 United States through Teladoc™.

U.S. board-certified physicians and pediatricians are available 24/7 for a consultation by phone, video, or the Teladoc™ mobile app. You also can see a behavioral health provider for depression, anxiety and stress, as well as a nutritionist for dietary conditions or dermatologist for skin conditions.

To register for Teladoc™ visit www.teladoc.com or call 855-Teladoc (855-835-2362) for more information.

Telehealth consultations are available to members outside the 50 United States through our telehealth vendor, vHealth by Aetna. Access telehealth services 24/7/365 by web, phone, and the vHealth mobile app to receive treatment for general medicine. Treatment may include preventive care as well as treatment for acute and chronic illnesses. A provider also may give referrals and prescribe medications, when appropriate.

To sign up, download vHealth by Aetna in the App Store or Google Play Store or visit https://globalcareondemand.com/aetna.

Gender-Affirming Healthcare Coverage

FSBP recognizes the importance of gender-affirming healthcare for transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse individuals. Our coverage includes gender reassignment surgery to address gender dysphoria, ensuring that members have access to necessary medical interventions. Additionally, FSBP provides care coordinators for complex conditions, offering support and guidance throughout the healthcare journey. You can read more about what surgeries are covered here.

AFSPA Talks: Educational Resources

For additional resources, our podcast AFSPA Talks features discussions on LGBTQ+ youth and related topics. In a past episode, CEO Kyle Longton and Alyssa Clayden from the Truman Group explore various aspects of LGBTQ+ identity, including the coming out process, gender dysphoria, and parental reactions. This conversation provides valuable insights and support for both LGBTQ+ individuals and their families.

Be on the lookout for another podcast episode with Alyssa Clayden later this month! Make sure you do not miss our AFSPA Live episode on June 27, 2024, at 11 AM ET about LGBTQ+ benefits and coverage. You can watch live at youtube.com/afspacares.

At AFSPA, we are committed to providing comprehensive healthcare coverage that respects and supports the diverse needs of our members. Whether accessing LGBTQ+-affirming care, seeking mental wellness resources, or finding educational support, we’re here to ensure that all members receive the care they deserve.
